It's a sensory delight that you must experience for yourself.

Things to Do in Bilbao - Casco Viejo

San Nikolas Eliza

Located near the Arenal Park, San Nicolás Church is an 18th-century Baroque gem dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of sailors. Built between 1743 and 1756, the church was designed by Ignacio Ibero, showcasing a Greek cross layout and a striking neoclassical façade. Inside, you will find beautifully crafted altarpieces and an ornate dome that enhances the interior’s grandeur.

Plaza Nueva

Plaza Nueva, one of the top things to see in Bilbao, is an iconic square dating back to 1851. Designed in a neoclassical style, it serves as a lively social and cultural hub, surrounded by arched walkways filled with charming cafés, restaurants, and bars. Every Sunday, it comes alive with a popular flea market offering books, coins, and antiques for collectors to explore.

Tailor-Made Top Tip:

Plaza Nueva is a perfect location to sample Bilbao’s pintxos (tapas). I had a lunch of delicious pintxos at Gure Toki, but there are plenty of other pintxos bars around the square.

Bizkaiko Arkeologia Museoa

This museum provides insight into the rich archaeological history of the Biscay region, from prehistoric settlements to medieval times, presenting artifacts, reconstructions, and interactive exhibits that showcase the evolution of human habitation in the area. Opened in 2008, the museum is an excellent place for history enthusiasts wanting to understand Bilbao’s deeper past. Highlights include Iron Age tools, Roman artifacts, and medieval relics.

Bilboko Donejakue Katedrala

Bilbao’s Santiago Cathedral is the city’s most important religious site, dedicated to Saint James and serving as a key stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Originally constructed in the 14th century, it features a mix of Gothic and neo-Gothic elements, with an imposing spire and a beautiful cloister. Inside, visitors can admire its ribbed vaults, stained glass windows, and impressive main altar. If you're wondering what to do in Bilbao, visiting the cathedral is a must due to its remarkable historical and architectural significance, offering insight into the city's rich religious and cultural heritage.

Zazpikaleak (Seven Streets)

The historic heart of Bilbao, Zazpikaleak (meaning "Seven Streets" in Basque), forms the foundation of Casco Viejo. Dating back to the 14th century, these original streets—Somera, Artecalle, Tendería, Belosticalle, Carnicería Vieja, Barrenkale, and Barrenkale Barrena—were the commercial and social backbone of medieval Bilbao. Over centuries, the area expanded, but these streets remained the nucleus of Bilbao’s urban life.

A walk through Zazpikaleak, a must-see Bilbao destination located just south of the cathedral, offers a captivating glimpse into history. With its narrow, winding streets lined with well-preserved buildings, historic landmarks, and bustling pintxos bars, this charming area promises an unforgettable journey into the city's vibrant past.

Situated along the banks of the Nervión River, visiting Ribera Market is among the best things to do in Bilbao. As one of the largest covered markets in Europe, it boasts origins dating back to the 14th century, while its current Art Deco structure was completed in 1929. Inside, you can explore a vast selection of fresh produce, seafood, meats, and local delicacies, as well as enjoy a vibrant food court serving Basque specialties—a must for any food enthusiast looking to experience Bilbao’s culinary delights.

San Antón Church is one of Bilbao’s most emblematic landmarks, featuring prominently on the city’s coat of arms. Built in the 15th century, it showcases Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements, with later Baroque modifications. Its riverside location near the old market makes it a picturesque site to visit. Inside, the church houses impressive altarpieces and religious artwork. Tourists visiting Bilbao should not miss this historic church, which is deeply connected to the city’s development and identity.

Bidebarrietako Liburutegi Nagusia

Housed in a striking 19th-century building, the Bidebarrieta Library is Bilbao’s main public library, known for its grand reading rooms and literary significance. Located in the heart of the Old Town, it was inaugurated in 1890 and remains a cultural landmark, often hosting literary events and conferences. The architecture blends classical and modernist styles, with an impressive central staircase and intricate stained-glass windows. While primarily a research and reading space, visitors can admire the building’s historical beauty and occasionally attend exhibitions or talks.

Accommodation in Bilbao

When staying in Bilbao, I’d suggest looking at accommodation near the Abando or Casco Viejo districts. Most of the city’s attractions are in these areas and you will find that you can easily experience all these highlights on foot if you are based there.

For a touch of luxury, consider staying at the Vincci Consulado de Bilbao or the Goien Boutique Hotel. Meanwhile the Hotel Ercilla de Bilbao, Autograph Collection and the Hotel Ilunion San Mamés are popular mid-range options. However, if you are looking for a budget stay there are a number of hostels, such as the Latroupe La Granja and the Ganbara Hostel
